Box Score 2 ROCKLIN, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos softball team wrapped up their 2013 regular season in fine fashion, shutting out William Jessup on the road 2-0 and 1-0 to conclude the regular season with a 40-8 records. By holding the Warriors scoreless in both games, the Cougars—known for their strong pitching and defense— have now shutout their opponent 23 times in 48 games played (47.9%) this season.
It took extra innings for either team to get a run across in game one Monday, as Cougar ace
Cortney Allen and and Warrior standout Emily Buhrkuhl were each sharp throughout.
The Cougars threatened in the first after a single and a walk, but nothing was made out of the opportunity. CSUSM had another golden opportunity in the fourth inning using their proficiency on the basepaths, as
Patricia Banda singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a single by
Tani Leasau, but was thrown out attempting to take home as part of a double-steal with one out.
Caylyn Rodriguez was placed on second to start the eighth inning per international tie-breaker rules, and she came around to give San Marcos its first run after
Kaitlin McGinley walked and joined her in a double-steal to put runners on second and third for
Alex Miller. Miller reached on a fielder's choice as Rodriguez beat an infielder's throw home, and
Olivia Lucatuorto promptly brought home McGinley with a bunt single to give Allen a two-run lead.
Allen (31-4) mowed down the Warriors with a 1-2-3 inning to complete the shutout victory and extend her NAIA leading win total to 31. She allowed just three hits over eight innings, striking out four.
Offenses were scarce once again in the second game of the day and final regular season game for the Cougars, with CSUSM driving home the game's only run in the fifth inning.
Caylyn Rodriguez singled with one-out, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on an error by the shortstop. Rodriguez also doubled in the game and was the only hitter on either side to record more than one hit.
Katie Wilkinson (5-3) was in control in the circle for the Cougars, allowing just two hits over five innings before Allen came into complete the save with two hitless innings. Allen added her tenth career save, where she stands as CSUSM's career leader in the category.
William Jessup dropped to 27-14 with the losses. Cal State San Marcos will have some time to rest before the A.I.I. Conference Tournament in Houston, Tex., May 1-3.
