Box Score 2 REDDING, Calif.—The No.3 ranked Cal State San Marcos softball team rebounded from a rare two-game losing streak to sweep Simpson University on the road 4-1 and 9-1 Sunday.
The Cougars trailed early in the first game with the Red Hawks getting a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, but CSUSM responded back in the third inning to turn the tables. Two runs were scored as team RBI leader
Olivia Lucatuorto brought home
Caylyn Rodriguez and
Brittney Guy with a two-out double, giving the Cougars a 2-1 edge.
The game remained tight until the seventh inning when CSUSM added two insurance runs on a Lucatuorto groundout and a
Patricia Banda single to centerfield.
Cortney Allen closed the door in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her 30
th win of the season. Over seven innings, the Cougar ace allowed just five hits and struck out four, allowing just the single run.
In the bottom half of the doubleheader, CSUSM wasted no time jumping on Red Hawk starter Katie Bell—the reigning Cal Pac pitcher of the week. The Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning on six hits and a walk.
CSUSM added two more runs in the second on
Olivia Lucatuorto's first homerun of the season and her fifth RBI of the afternoon. Simpson added a run in the second inning of CSUSM starter
Katie Wilkinson, but neither team scored the remainder of the way, giving the Cougars a 9-1 run-rule victory after five innings.
Wilkinson improved to 4-3 on the season and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three Red Hawk batters. Freshman center fielder
Caylyn Rodriguez went 4-for-6 with a double on the afternoon, scoring twice and driving in three runs.
CSUSM now stands at 38-8 entering their final two regular season games tomorrow against William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif. Simpson dropped to 30-22 with the losses.
