Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 11 Cal State San Marcos baseball team beat No. 9 The Master's College in the teams' series finale, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. TMC won Saturday's first game, 11-4, to take two of three in the set from the Cougars.
CSUSM (30-9) tallied 15 hits and used a five-run fourth inning to put distance between itself and TMC (34-15) in game two.
Brandon Bentson put the Cougars on the board in the first with an RBI single that drove in
Kyle Secciani.
Kyle Kuck scored on an error by the TMC shortstop on
Mike Guadagnini's grounder in the second. Bentson added the Cougars' third run in the third inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
After Joe Riddle knocked a two-run homer over the right field wall to make it 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Cougars strung together six consecutive one-out hits in the bottom half of the inning to open an 8-2 advantage.
Kuck,
Rich Montanez and Guadagnini all singled to load the bases before
Tyler Bernard brought two in with another single to left center. Secciani followed with a two-run single up the middle to score Guadagnini and Bernard.
Kenny Belzer got into the act, sending a single up the middle to bring home Bentson and put CSUSM up six.
The Cougars finished off the scoring in the sixth on Montanez's RBI double and an RBI infield single by Guadagnini.
The No. 1-3 batters – Bernard, Secciani and Bentson – went 6-for-11 with five RBI and four runs in game two. Montanez and Guadagnini were both 2-for-3.
Hunter Brown (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Cougars, going a season-high 5.1 innings while striking out five.
In game one,
James Dykstra (8-3) held TMC scoreless through its first six at-bats, but the Mustangs rallied for two in the seventh, five in the eighth and four in the ninth.
Secciani's RBI triple handed the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the third before they took a two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth when Swilley scored off an error on
Marcus Meraz's groundball.
TMC was subdued until the top of the seventh. Riddle doubled down the line before Ryan Shackleford brought him in with a triple to right center. Chris Talley singled to bring in Shackleford to tie the game at 2-2.
The Mustangs then caught the Cougars off guard twice in a row, reaching safely on back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases with no out. It looked like TMC would add another when Caleb Halverson popped out to centerfield, but Secciani gunned down Bryce Clancy at the plate for the double play. Jonathan Popadics flied out to end the threat.
The top of the eighth inning started much like the top of seventh for Dykstra. TMC was able to put its first three batters of the at-bat on board. Shackleford doubled down the right field line to bring in two runners before Talley singled through the left side to drive in two more and make it 6-2. Sam Robison added the final run of the inning, sending home Talley on a sacrifice fly.
TMC added four more in the ninth inning to take an 11-2 lead.
Bentson hit a two-run homerun over the right-field fence in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Cougars' final runs.
