SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
The No. 11 Cal State San Marcos baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader, 5-1 and 1-0 (7 innings), against Westmont at Russ Carr Field. CSUSM took two of three games from WC in the teams' three-game set after winning game one, 11-3, on Thursday afternoon in San Marcos.

The Cougars move to 29-7 overall on the season and the Warriors are now 22-22.

Game One

Steve Messner (6-1) pitched seven scoreless innings while Mike Guadagnini went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, as the Cougars downed the Warriors 5-1 in Saturday's opening game.

Kenny Belzer handed the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, singling home Kyle Secciani and Tyler Bernard with a two-out single up the middle.

In the fifth, Guadagnini led off with a single before scoring on Brandon Bentson's groundout to short.

Marcus Meraz knocked in Kody Sepulveda in the top of the eighth to make it 4-0.

The Warriors got one back in the eighth inning, but the Cougars added another in the top of the ninth as Guadagnini scored off an error by the WC shortstop on Sepulveda's grounder.

Messner allowed two hits, walked three, and became just the fourth CSUSM pitcher to record 10 strikeouts in a single game. He has worked six or more innings in his last five starts.

Bernard went 3-for-4.

Game Two

William Barring's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the game's only run, as No. 11 CSUSM fell 1-0 in game two.

David Gabel led off the inning with a single before stealing second when CSUSM starter James Dykstra (8-2) struck-out Thomas Hocutt. Barring drove a ball through the middle on a full count to bring in Gabel.

Westmont's Brian Murphy allowed a leadoff hit to Bernard in the first inning, but erased the runner with a doubleplay in the next at-bat. Bentson walked, but he would be the last Cougar baserunner to reach. Murphy retired the next 19 batters in order.

Dykstra pitched six innings while giving up just four hits and striking out four.
