Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Kenny Belzer homered twice, including a back-to-back jack with
Kody Sepulveda in the sixth inning, as the No. 11 Cal State San Marcos baseball team won its sixth game in a row, 11-3, over Westmont College on Thursday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
After Belzer's homer to left field made it 4-1 in favor of CSUSM (28-6) in the fifth, Sepulveda lined a two-out, two-run homerun off the scoreboard in left-center in the sixth. Belzer followed suit, sending another solo homerun down the left-field line to make it 7-1.
The pair of homeruns were part of a 3-for-5 day for the senior third baseman. He scored three times and now leads the team with five homeruns on the season. After going without a hit for five games, Belzer is 5-for-10 with five runs, four RBI, two homeruns and a double over his last two contests.
Marcus Meraz continued the two-out rally in the sixth, beating out a single to the shortstop.
Kyle Kuck doubled down the right-field line to drive in Meraz before scoring himself on an error by the Westmont (21-21) second baseman.
Meraz added an RBI single in the seventh to make it 11-1 as part of a 4-for-5 afternoon. Meraz is riding a seven-game hitting streak and has tallied two or more hits in his last five games.
Kyle Secciani's RBI triple made it 1-0 in the first inning after
Tyler Bernard's leadoff walk.
Brandon Bentson laced a single through the right side to bring in Secciani and make it 2-0.
Kuck led-off the second with a double and moved to third on
Mike Guadagnini's single up the middle. Secciani notched his second RBI in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 3-0.
Despite a comfortable final win margin, things seemed much more in doubt for the Cougars in the top of the fifth.
CSUSM starter
Hunter Brown pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out one. However, the Warriors were able to get runners on second and third with just one down against reliever
Kevin Hilton in the fifth.
Mike Scaramella replaced Hilton on the hill and walked his first batter to load the bases. Brent Fukushima lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the runner from third to make it 3-1.
Scaramella walked the next batter and was replaced by Kuck, the original designated hitter. With the tying run on second and the go-ahead run aboard, Kuck forced William Barring to pop out on the first pitch to end the inning.
Kuck (3-0) worked the next 2 and 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. The left-hander has yet to allow a run, earned or unearned in nine relief appearances this season.
He gave way for Bentson in the eighth inning. Bentson, in his second career pitching appearance for the Cougars, struck out one. The Warriors connected with a two-run homerun in the top of the ninth to bring it within eight.
Bentson was 3-for-6 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
The Cougars travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday for a doubleheader against Westmont at noon.
