No. 1 CSUSM Tops William Jessup and Biola, Extends Win Streak to 11

LA MIRADA, Calif.— Backed by strong pitching once again, the Cal State San Marcos softball team extended their winning streak to 11 games with victories over William Jessup and Biola at Freedom Field.
 
After having their doubleheader against William Jessup rained out Friday, the Cougars showed no rust starting out the day with a 2-0 victory over a tough Warrior squad that 15-7 entering play Saturday.
 
CSUSM jumped on the board early when Olivia Lucatuorto knocked in Kaitlin McGinley from second base with an RBI single— her team leading 27th RBI of the season. McGinley singled with one out and stole her 20th base in as many attempts prior to scoring.
 
The teams remained locked in a 1-0 pitcher's duel until the 6th inning when the Cougars wrapped together three hits and added an insurance run with an Alex Miller RBI single.
 
It was all the Cougars would need with Cortney Allen (15-1) in the circle, who pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out four.
 
Allen and the Cougars kept rolling in the afternoon game against Biola, piling up five runs in the first frame en route to an 8-0 run rule victory.
 
Brogan Hoenisch went 2-for-3 with a bases loaded triple and tallied four RBI, and Alex Miller added two hits and two RBI of her own. Allen (16-1) added another four shutout innings before giving way to Jourdan Lamoureux to close out the final inning. The senior All-American from Elk Grove, Calif. picked up her NAIA leading 16th win and lowered her ERA to 0.80— the lowest in the NAIA for any pitcher with at least 55 innings.
 
With the victories, CSUSM improved to 20-3 on the season. The Cougars will put both their 11 game winning streak and 27 game home winning streak on the line as they host William Woods (Mo.) Monday at 2:00pm at the CSUSM Softball Field.
