CSUSM Hosts Hit Parade, Sweeps Ashford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team combined for 22 runs and 27 hits as the Cougars downed Ashford (Iowa), 8-0 and 14-2 (7 innings), in the teams' Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) doubleheader on Monday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Cougars improve to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in A.I.I. play, while the Saints drop to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the A.I.I.

Game One

James Dykstra (4-0) pitched a three-hit, complete-game shutout and Kenny Belzer went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBI, as the Cougars cruised past the Saints, 8-0, in game one.

Dykstra struck out 11 and retired 15 consecutive batters between the second and seventh innings. It marked his second-straight complete game performance in which he struck out 11.

Kyle Secciani notched a one-out double in the bottom of the second inning and was brought home by Belzer's single to left to make it 1-0.

The Cougars added two more in the fourth, as Belzer doubled-home Tyler Bernard before scoring on an overthrow by the AU second baseman.

Kody Sepulveda made it 4-0 with a solo homerun over the center-field fence on the first pitch of the sixth inning.

Then, Kyle Kuck was hit by a pitch before being pinch-ran for by Dylan Costello. Mike Guadagnini moved Costello over with a sacrifice bunt to the left side before Secciani knocked Costello in with a single through the left side.

Secciani stole second before scoring on Tyler Bernard's double down the left-field line to put the Cougars up six.

In the eighth inning, Bernard's sacrifice fly brought home Secciani before Brandon Bentson singled through the middle to score Belzer after another double by the Cougar third baseman.

Secciani scored three times in the game while going 3-for-4. Sepulveda was 2-for-4.

Game Two

CSUSM scored twice in each of the first three innings before rallying for six runs with two outs in the fifth to put game two out of reach.

Bentson doubled down the left-field line to score Guadagnini before coming home on Sepulveda's single through the left side.

Marcus Meraz tripled to right-center to lead off the second inning and scored on Jimmy Six's (0-1) subsequent wild pitch. Kyle Kuck followed with a double before moving to third on John Swilley's grounder to the right side.

Secciani knocked home Kuck with another groundout to the right side to make it 4-0.

Sepulveda doubled-in Bentson and Kuck singled-home Kevin Hilton in the third inning.

In the fifth, Brooks Noble tallied his first RBIs as a Cougar with a two-run single up the middle. Secciani followed with a single through the right side to score Noble before Guadagnini hit one in the exact same spot that brought home Manny Cardeiro.

Belzer capped off the rally with a two-run single to left, scoring Guadagnini and Secciani to make it 12-1.

Swilley added a RBI groundout and Secciani brought home Zach Tieger with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Steve Messer (2-0) worked five solid innings for the Cougars, allowing three hits and an earned run while striking out seven.

Frank Charlton worked the final two innings for CSUSM, striking out the side in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Sepulveda went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Secciani was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Bentson scored twice and added an RBI with a 2-for-3 performance.

The Cougars and Saints meet again on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.
