SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos softball team received strong pitching efforts from
Cortney Allen and
Katie Wilkinson and pieced together runs early in both games to sweep Tuesday's doubleheader 2-0 and 4-0 against Simpson University at the CSUSM Softball Field.
In the first game, the Cougars threatened early with back-to-back singles by
Alex Miller and
Kaitlin McGinley to begin the bottom of the first inning. After a sacrifice bunt by
Patricia Banda put both runners in scoring position,
Olivia Lucatuorto knocked in her team leading 33
rd RBI of the season with an RBI groundout to short to give CSUSM a 1-0 edge.
The Cougars added another run right after when Simpson centerfielder Nicole Hutchins couldn't hold on to a catch after a long run, extending the CSUSM lead to two.
After the first inning, neither team was able to put together any serious scoring chances until the 5
th inning, when Simpson advanced a runner to third base with two outs after a single, stolen base, and an error. Unfazed, Allen promptly struck out the next batter swinging to escape the inning unharmed.
The Red Hawks rallied one last time in the final inning with two singles, but Allen (21-2) sealed the victory and her ninth complete game shutout with a bunt groundout to third. The senior from Elk Grove, Calif. struck out six and now has a 0.84 ERA— the lowest in the NAIA for any pitcher with 100 innings or more.
Much like first game Tuesday, CSUSM got off to a quick start in the second game of the doubleheader and never looked back. This time, however, the Cougars put up three runs in the bottom of the first after loading the bases with one out.
Brogan Hoenisch brought home the first run with an RBI groundout, and then
Kaitlin McGinley scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. Shortstop
Sarah Quiambao then hit a clutch two-out double to extend the lead to three.
The Cougars added another insurance run in the second inning when McGinley brought home
Brittney Guy with an RBI single to left field to increase the lead to 4-0.
Simpson put together a good rally in the fourth inning by advancing runners to second and third with no outs, but pitcher
Katie Wilkinson kept her poise and smoothly induced a pop-up, groundout, and fly out to escape the inning without any damage.
The Red Hawks last major threat in the fifth inning was quickly put to rest on a perfect throw from Guy in centerfield to nail Simpson's Hutchins attempting to advance to third after a successful stolen base.
Wilkinson (3-1) went the distance for her first complete game shutout of the season, and has allowed just three earned runs in her last 29.1 innings pitched. The sophomore from Carlsbad High School gave up just five hits and a walk.
CSUSM improves to 28-4 on the season with the victories, while Simpson falls to 22-14. The Cougars will look to gather themselves again quickly as they host Columbia College (Mo.) Wednesday and Hope International Thursday in a pair of doubleheaders.
