TUCSON, Ariz.— The No. 1 ranked Cal State San Marcos softball team squeezed out a pair of victories against British Columbia and Dickinson State Saturday in the Tucson Invitational before walloping Judson University 13-1 to wrap up a three-win day. The Cougars defeated the Thunderbirds from Canada 1-0 in the first game, and edged out the Blue Hawks 2-1 in the second.
Game 1: CSUSM 1- British Columbia 0
The Cougars and Thunderbirds were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until team RBI leader
Olivia Lucatuorto ripped an RBI double to give San Marcos a 1-0 advantage.
With
Cortney Allen on the mound that's often all the Cougars need, and that proved to be the case again Saturday. Allen tossed her 8
th individual shutout of the season and picked up her 18
th win, but not without drama.
British Columbia battled to load the bases in the bottom of 7
th with one out, but Allen induced a pop out and ground out to seal the win.
Game 2: CSUSM 2- Dickinson State 1
Cal State San Marcos pulled out another tight win after
Kaitlin McGinley made a diving catch in left field with two outs and a the tying run on second in the final frame to secure the victory. McGinley also had two hits in the game to lead the Cougars.
Katie Wilkinson pitched five strong innings to move to 1-1 on the season, and
Cortney Allen earned her second save by closing out the final two innings.
Game 3: CSUSM 13 – Judson 1
Alex Miller led off the game with a homerun, and the hits kept coming for San Marcos as the Cougars rolled to a big victory.
Cortney Allen (19-2) earned the win, increasing her NAIA leading total and leaving her now six wins above the next closest competitors.
Shortstop
Sarah Quiambao had a strong return in her first day back recovering from injury, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBI.
CSUSM improves to 24-4 after the three wins Saturday.
