CSUSM Splits Doubleheader with Sioux Falls, Wins Series 2-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team took down the University of Sioux Falls 6-3 in game one before falling 9-0 (7 innings) in game two on Monday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

CSUSM (15-2) took two of three contests in the teams' three-game set after also downing USF (4-7) 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Game One

Tyler Bernard went 3-for-4 with a  double and a triple, while Kenny Belzer, Brandon Bentson and Dylan Costello each went 2-for-4 in game one.

Mike Guadagnini got CSUSM on the board with a bases-loaded sac fly to left field in the second inning. After a wild pitch by USF starter Noah Coleman (1-2) moved the runners to second and third, Kyle Secciani laced a two-out, two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0.

USF would pull within one in its next at-bat on a pair of defensive errors by CSUSM. Belzer mishandled an innocent two-out chopper by Corey Vasquez before Costello had the ball go under his glove in left field. Two USF runners came around to make it 3-2.

Guadagnini hit another deep ball in the fourth inning and lucked into a double when USF centerfielder Noah Durkin lost the ball in the sun. Bernard brought in Guadganini with a two-out triple before Belzer followed with an RBI single to drive in Bernard and put CSUSM up 5-2.

CSUSM starter Kevin Hilton (3-0) delivered five innings for the Cougars before giving way to Kyle Kuck in the sixth. Hilton scattered three hits, struck out a pair and the two runs charged to him were unearned.

Kuck retired all four batters he faced.

The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but were only able to put across one run when Jon Putnam drew a walk to bring in Costello and make it 6-2.

Sioux Falls scored its final run on an RBI single to center by Jeremy Varner in the eighth.

Game Two

CSUSM had its six-game winning streak snapped while being shutout for the first time this season in game two.

USF starter Henry Ojeda (1-1) earned his first win of the year, working all seven innings while striking out three.

CSUSM's Steve Messner (2-1) struggled with control out of the gate, posting five walks while being charged with seven runs over 3.1 innings of work. The Cougars totaled four errors in the game.

In the second inning, Michael Vine walked to lead off the third inning before Ryan Fobes reached on an error by Bernard at short. The runners moved to second and third when Messner's delivery was dropped by CSUSM catcher Jon Putnam.

Noah Durkin lifted a sacrifice fly to score Vine before Cory Vasquez knocked in Fobes to make it 3-0.

A four-run fourth inning by USF put the game out of reach for CSUSM. Messner delivered a wild pitch with the bases loaded to force in the first run before a two-run, bloop single by Varner to put USF up six.

Zach Ireland followed with a single up the middle to bring in Damian Kardas.

Matt Bataska took over for Messner and promptly got USF to ground into a 5-3 double play to escape the inning down seven.

The Cougars registered just five hits, their lowest amount since posting two in a win over Bethesda on Feb. 15.

CSUSM hosts Vanguard on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.
