Dykstra Matches School Record for K’s, CSUSM Tops Sioux Falls 9-1

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – James Dykstra matched his own school record with 12 strikeouts in the Cal State San Marcos baseball team's 9-1 win over Sioux Falls on Sunday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The senior-right hander worked seven innings, limiting USF (3-6) to three hits while striking out nearly half (12-of-25) of the batters he faced. It marked his third-straight outing of 11 or more strikeouts as he moved to 5-0 on the year.

He set the school record for K's in a 4-1 win over Fresno Pacific on April 21, 2012.

Marcus Meraz, Tyler Bernard and Kyle Kuck each had a pair of hits and Kody Sepulveda drove in three runs as the Cougars earned their fifth win in a row to improve to 14-1 overall on the season.

CSUSM opened the scoring in the second inning, as Meraz came around from second base when USF shortstop Michael Vine's throw sailed over the first baseman's head off a grounder by Jon Putnam.

Sepulveda and Putnam added sacrifice flies in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to put the Cougars up 3-0.

Dykstra, who posted seven strikeouts through his first four innings, ran into a little trouble in the fifth after granting a leadoff walk and a single through the right side. A pitch in the dirt ended up at the backstop as Jeremy Varner came across to make it 3-1.

The San Diego-native responded by sitting down two of his next three batters to get out of the inning without any further damage.

Meraz increased CSUSM's lead back to three with a single to bring in Tyler Bernard in the bottom half of the fifth before Sepulveda notched a two-run single up the middle in the sixth to make it 6-1.

The Cougars capped the game off with a three-run seventh inning. Kyle Kuck singled to center before giving way to Dylan Costello on the base path. Putnam was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.

With runners on the corners and one out, Kyle Secciani scored Costello on a groundout to the right side. Bernard then walked to fill the bases.

Kenny Belzer followed with another walk to bring in Mike Guadagnini before Brandon Bentson was struck by Andrew Goodenow's offering to force-in Secciani.

Leading 9-1, Addison Domingo worked the eighth inning before Justin Hertzmann retired the side in order in the ninth, thanks to two stellar plays by Secciani in center field.

Secciani made a diving catch at the warning track on Keith Cutler's deep drive before getting a great jump on Damian Kardas' line drive to right center. Varner popped out to third to end the ball game.

CSUSM and USF will play a doubleheader on Monday at noon at CSUSM Baseball Field to wrap-up the three-game set.
