SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos softball team padded their home winning streak to 25 consecutive games in defeating Arizona Christian 11-0 and Hope International 5-0 Friday in the opening day of the 2013 Cougar Clash.
Cortney Allen picked up her 11
th and 12th wins of the season, and
Brogan Hoenisch went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead the Cougars.
Game 1: CSUSM 11 – Arizona Christian 0
Cortney Allen once again had her way with the Firestorm, picking up her fifth win against Arizona Christian within the last week after back to back doubleheader victories in Phoenix last weekend. Allen went four innings allowing just two hits while striking out three.
Katie Wilkinson finished off the shutout with a perfect fifth.
The Cougars scored twice in the opening frame on
Patricia Banda's sacrifice fly and
Olivia Lucatuorto's RBI double to left center. CSUSM piled on four more runs in the second inning, highlighted by Banda's 2-RBI double. She finished the game with four RBI.
San Marcos put the game out of reach in the third frame with five more runs to increase the lead to 11.
Brogan Hoenisch went 3-for-3, and shortstop
Melyssa Bellamy went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and a RBI.
Olivia Lucatuorto increased her RBI total on the season to 24 by going 2-for-2 with two doubles. Lucatuorto currently ranks 2
nd in the NAIA in runs batted in.
Game 2: CSUSM 5 Hope International 0
Cougars ace
Cortney Allen (12-1) led the Cougars with another strong outing (6 IP, 4H, 0 R, 5 K), and
Patricia Banda picked up RBI in each the first and third innings to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead after three.
CSUSM broke the game open in the fourth with three runs, thanks to back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles to left field by
Melyssa Bellamy,
Caylyn Rodriguez, and and
Alex Miller. Cal State San Marcos'
Alex Miller – already the NAIA leader in doubles prior to the game – went 3-for-4 with two doubles (12) to increase her lead in the category to three over Concordia (Ore.) slugger Taylor Copher.
Jourdan Lamoureux closed out the final inning allowing just a single to seal the Cougars' 10
th shutout in 18 games and fourth in a row. The Cougars will close out the Cougar Clash with two games Sunday against Arizona Christian at 9:00 am and La Sierra at 1:00 pm.
