No. 8 CSUSM Hits the Road

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The eighth-ranked Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team faces Holy Names on Thursday night before the Cougars clash with NCAA Division I opponent CSU Bakersfield in an exhibition on Saturday.

Eleventh Heaven
The Cougars enter this week's contests winners of 11 straight and 14 of their last 15 games. CSUSM has not fallen since Dec. 8, 2012 against defending national champion Concordia (Calif.). Prior to that, the Cougars' last loss came on Nov. 24, 2012.
 
A First
CSUSM registered triple digits for the first time in school history with a decisive 111-71 victory over La Sierra in its last game on Jan. 31. Six Cougars finished in double figures, led by Quincy Lawson's 18 and AJ Gasporra's 17. Adam Alfaro and Jacob Ranger tallied 15 apiece while Jose Rivera added 12 and Hakeem Washington recorded 11. Alfaro went 5-of-8 from behind the arc, including a spree of four 3-pointers in a row midway thought the second half. CSUSM previously set a record for point-total in its game prior to La Sierra (99 vs. UC Santa Cruz, Jan.25, 2013). The Cougars have won by 40 or more points three times this season (93-53 on Dec. 29 vs. Lethbridge, 99-56 on Jan. 25 vs. UCSC).

Holy Names Preview
Holy Names, currently in transition to NCAA Division II status, has dropped 11 of its last 12 games dating back to Dec. 18, 2012. The Hawks sit in last place in the PacWest Conference, where they are 1-11. HNU's lone win in conference play came against Point Loma Nazarene (61-55) on Jan. 26. The Cougars beat PLNU twice this year. CSUSM downed HNU in the only other meeting between the teams, 85-80, on Nov. 25, 2011 in Oakland.

CSUB Preview
CSU Bakersfield has won two of its last three games after a 75-63 win over Utah Valley last Saturday night. The Roadrunners shot a season-best 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range in the win. Like CSUSM, CSUB is an independent program without a conference affiliation. However, the Roadrunner men's basketball team will be joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2013-14.

D-1? No Problem
The Cougars' clash with the Roadrunners will be their fourth exhibition game against an NCAA Division I institution this season. CSUSM is 0-6 all-time against NCAA DI teams in exhibitions. The Cougars have faced San Diego State, UCLA and Nevada thus far in 2012-13.

Poll Sitters
The Cougars remained at No. 8 in the seventh regular-season edition of the 2012-13 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, it was announced Tuesday. CSUSM received a school-record 220 points in the poll. Head coach Jim Saia's team has been ranked in the Top 25 in every poll this season. They've been in the top 10 for five weeks straight and six of the last seven.

Gasporra Named Hall of Champions Star of the Month
 Senior AJ Gasporra has been named a Star of the Month for January by the San Diego Hall of Champions. A senior guard, Gasporra averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.25 steals per game. He shot 26 percent from the field (30-of-65) and made 40 percent of his 3-point attempts (13-of-32). He is the first CSUSM student-athlete to be named a Star of the Month during the 2012-13 athletic season.

Join CSUSM Athletics in honoring the 10 seniors on the men's basketball team on Feb. 23 against Bethesda at 7:30 p.m. It will be the final home game for the Cougars this year.
