No. 1 CSUSM Takes Two at Arizona Christian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. – Cortney Allen pitched a one-hit shutout in the opening game and Alex Miller hit the first homerun of the season for the Cougars in game two, as the No. 1 Cal State San Marcos softball team topped Arizona Christian, 13-0 and 5-1, in the first two games of the teams' four-game series on Friday afternoon at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

Tayler Ybarra went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Olivia Lucatuorto was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game one. Kaitlin McGinley, Patricia Banda, Sarah Quiambao, Lucatuorto and Ybarra each scored twice in the game.

The Cougars opened the game up with a seven-run second inning, as Tani Lesau was granted a run by advancing on consecutive passed balls. Melyssa Bellamy scored Lesau on an RBI groundout and Caylyn Rodriguez came across on another passed ball to make it 4-0.

McGinley scored from third on her and Banda's double steal and Ybarra followed with a RBI single to right to put CSUSM up six. Quiambao then reached on an error by the second baseman to allow Ybarra and Lucatuorto to come across and make it 8-0.

Two innings later, Quiambao doubled home Lucatuorto before Lesau brought home Ybarra with a single to left. Wilkinson scored on Bellamy's groundout to push the Cougars up 11.

With the run-rule already in sight, the Cougars capped it off as Miller scored on a fielder's choice created by McGinley before McGinley made it 13-0 on Ybarra's RBI single.

Miller led off game two with a homerun to deep center.

ACU finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second inning, snapping a 25.1-inning scoreless streak by Allen (8-1).

However, McGinley's three-run triple in the third inning put the Cougars up 4-1.

Lucatorto finished off the day with a double to left-center to drive in McGinley.

Jordan Lamoureux finished off the final three innings for the Cougars, allowing just four hits and striking out one.

The doubleheader marked the first-ever home games for ACU (0-12), which is playing its first year of intercollegiate softball.

CSUSM improves to 12-3 overall with the win, taking its seventh victory in its last eight contests.

The Cougars and Firestorm return to Rose Mofford Sports Complex on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
