Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 6 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team had its 14-game winning streak snapped as defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) used a second-half comeback to defend its home court, 85-78, on Thursday night at CU Arena.
CSUSM (22-5) led by as much as 12 in the second half, but CUI (18-10) went on an 11-2 run to pull within two at the nine-minute mark before taking its first lead with 5:53 remaining.
The Eagles expanded their lead to as much as six with under two minutes left. However, the Cougars chipped away as
Danny Redmon flipped up a layup to pull within 79-76 with 00:46 on the clock. The teams exchanged pairs of free throws to make it 81-78 with 15 seconds left.
On the ensuing out of bounds play, the Eagles threw it directly into the CSUSM bench to hand the ball back to the Cougars.
Bryan Emanuel had a try from the top of the key, but missed long and the ball went out of bounds back to CUI with seven seconds left.
Once again, CUI turned the ball over on the inbounds play as Redmon made an athletic grab off a wayward pass from Alex Rudd. Redmon pump-faked before passing it cross-court to
Jose Rivera, who found himself open after the melee in the left corner.
However, Rivera's attempt to tie the game with two seconds remaining missed to the left.
CSUSM was called for a technical foul and the Eagles made four consecutive free throws to ice the game.
Redmon scored a career-high 33 points, a season-high for any Cougar. He made 15-of-19 from the stripe, a new single-game program record.
AJ Gasporra added 12 points, while
Jacob Ranger finished with 10.
CSUSM shot just 3-of-20 from 3-point range.
The Eagles were led by 33 points from Peter Smith and 15 points from Brandon Hucks. Dakota Downs added 14 points and nine boards.
The Cougars opened up a 12-point lead with a 15-5 run midway through the first half, but the Eagles climbed back to make it a two-point game with five minutes remaining.
Out of a CSUSM timeout, Redmon completed a three-point play on a layup and a foul before Ranger drove to his right and scooped one up and in. Ranger added a 3-pointer at the two-minute mark as the Cougars used a 9-2 run over the last five minutes to take a 39-30 advantage at the break.
Redmon tallied 15 points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Cougars' loss is their first in nearly two months, since Dec. 8, 2012, when they fell at home to these same Eagles.
CSUSM ends its regular season on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta against Bethesda. Nine Cougar seniors will be honored for their service to the men's basketball program in a Senior Night ceremony at 7:15 p.m.
