Dykstra Hurls Complete Game as Cougars Survive

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – James Dykstra pitched a complete game and survived through a rough ninth inning as the Cal State San Marcos baseball team held on for a 5-4 win over Biola in sporadic rain on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Leading 5-2 in the top the ninth, Dykstra struck out two of the first three batters before Sam Thorne singled to keep the game alive. With runners on first and third, Michael Annunziata doubled down the left-field line to drive in both the runners and make it 5-4.

With the tying run 180 feet away, Dykstra worked two strikes on Vince Lawrence before forcing the BU (12-6) left fielder to pop out to Tyler Bernard at short.

Dykstra improved to 3-0 with the win, tallying 11 strikeouts on 114 total pitches. His 11 K's are the second-most in a single game in program history, one less than the school record of 12 - which he holds.

CSUSM (8-0) was granted four unearned runs in the ball game off six Eagle errors.

Brandon Bentson came aboard via an error by Lawrence in the bottom of the first before Kody Sepulveda made Biola pay with a two-out, two-run triple to right center.

The Eagles got one back on an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, but once again the Cougars took advantage of defensive miscues to score a pair of runs in the fifth.

Bernard singled and moved over to third after Will Emerson's pick-off attempt sailed into right field. Kyle Secciani made it 3-1 with a single to score Bernard.

Secciani stole second base and was granted third when Nick Oddo's throw from behind the plate went into center field. Kenny Belzer followed with an innocent grounder to the right side, but first baseman Sage Poland booted it which allowed Secciani to score.

Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Woolsey drew an innocuous two-out walk. However, the situation quickly became dangerous for BU's Javier Martinez when Bentson followed with a walk on five pitches.

Kyle Kuck took advantage of the free base runners, singling through the right side to score Woolsey from second for what proved to be the game-winning run.

CSUSM hosts three more games at CSUSM Baseball Field this week. La Sierra is in town over the weekend, with one game on Friday and a doubleheader on Sunday.

Friday's contest begins at 2:00 p.m. while Sunday's first game starts at noon.
