CSUSM Records First-Ever No Hitter in Sweep of Bethesda

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Six different pitchers combined to register the Cal State San Marcos baseball team's first-ever no hitter in game one of the Cougars' doubleheader against Bethesda on Friday afternoon. CSUSM (7-0) took game one 9-0 before edging the Flames 1-0 in the second game.

Mike Scaramella worked the first three innings, Kevin Hilton (1-0) worked a pair, and Addison Domingo, Jackson Gaskins, Tony Guerra and Matt Bataska each recorded an inning. The unit combined for eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Bethesda generated just five runners in the contest, three of them via Cougar errors.

“I thought the pitching was outstanding. I think we have got to get going at the plate a little better by working on our approach,” said CSUSM head coach Dennis Pugh. “I think what's nice about [the 7-0 start], is that all these close games we lost last year. And now we've turned it around. So far we've been able to do that and I'm excited about it.”

Kenny Belzer got the Cougars going in the bottom of the first, launching a deep fly ball off the top of the wall in the left field corner. The ball stayed in the field of play, but got away from the left fielder and Belzer rounded the bases for a two-run inside-the-park homerun.

In the third inning, Kyle Secciani scored from third on an error by the center fielder and Brandon Bentson singled home Jacob Woolsey to make it 4-0.

The Cougars added two more in the fourth, taking advantage of another error by the Flames and a sacrifice fly by Belzer.

In the fifth, Kody Sepulveda and Mike Guadagnini notched RBI singles before Secciani scored Woolsey on a sacrifice fly.

Guadagnini finished game one 2-for-3 with three runs.

In game two, it was Bethesda pitcher Drew Hammond who took a no-no through the fifth inning.

However, Tyler Bernard opened the sixth with a single before moving over to second on Guadagnini's sacrifice bunt. Secciani followed with a routine grounder to the short stop, but Bernard forced Abraham Morelo to hesitate before throwing to first, allowing Secciani to beat the throw.

With runners on the corners and one out, Hammond threw his next pitch in the dirt as Bernard scurried home from third for the game's only run.

Frank Charlton (3-0) earned the win for the Cougars, allowing just a single hit while striking out a pair over two innings.

The Cougars have the weekend off before hosting Biola on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.
