No. 12 CSUSM Upended by Hope International, Suffers First Loss

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 12 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the floor and lost for the first time this season on Saturday at Hope International, 82-67.

CSUSM (9-1) took a seven-point advantage into the half, but HIU (7-1) took an early-second half lead before a 14-2 run put the Cougars in a double-digit hole that they could not climb out of.

De'End Parker led the Cougars with 22 points of 7-of-16 shooting while adding a team-high four assists. Jason Johnson tallied 16 points and Malcom Lemmons had 10. Lemmons made three of his four attempts from behind the arc.

CSUSM shot just 20 percent (6-of-30) in the second half while HIU made 56.3 percent (18-of-32) of its shots.

A 9-2 run saw the Cougars take an eight-point lead, 19-11, on Parker's 3-pointer at the 12:41 mark of the opening half.

The Royals would pull within two, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Lemmons and Johnson made it 29-21 in favor of CSUSM.

The Cougars didn't let HIU within four the rest of the stanza and took a 40-33 lead into the break.

The Royals went on an 8-1 stretch over the first three and a half minutes of the second half to take a 44-41 edge.

Johnson converted a 3-point play to tie it at 44-44 with 16:18 left, but HIU's 14-2 spurt saw the Royals take a 58-46 advantage four minutes later.

It proved to be a deficit that CSUSM could not climb back from. The closest the Cougars would get would be six points the rest of the way.

The Cougars' nine consecutive wins to start the season was the second-longest winning streak in program history.

CSUSM's next action is Dec. 17 and 18 at the CSUSM Holiday Classic at MiraCosta College. The Cougars take on Trinity Western in the tournament opener on Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m. The following day, CSUSM hosts Westminster at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament finale.
