Cougars Punish Spartan Mistakes in CSUSM Holiday Classic Opener

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – De'End Parker scored 21 points, Malcolm Lemmons had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team took advantage of 28 Spartan turnovers in a 94-71 victory over Trinity Western in the teams' opening game of the CSUSM Holiday Classic on Tuesday night at MiraCosta College.

CSUSM scored 44 points off TWU miscues and improved to 10-1 on the season. It is the quickest the program has reached the double-digit win mark in its three-year history.

TWU (8-9) took an early lead, but a 12-0 run by the Cougars saw CSUSM take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Zack Zaragoza's 3-pointer put CSUSM up 29-18 at the 10:15 mark. TWU fought back to cut its deficit to six, but Zaragoza responded with back-to-back 3-pointers and Adam Eakles closed the half with a deuce to put the Cougars ahead 50-38 at the break.

Zaragoza was 3-of-5 from behind the arc in the first half. He finished with 13 points.

The Spartans pulled back within six just 3:30 into the second half. However, the Cougars responded with a 9-1 spurt in the following two minutes. Bryan Emanuel's 3-pointer made it 66-52 with 13:59 remaining.

Emanuel put together an efficient performance off the bench for CSUSM. He was 4-of-5 from the field, made all four of his free throws, scored 14 points and matched Jason Johnson with a team-high four assists.

Emanuel and Quincy Lawson led a second group that combined for 27 points.  Lawson had eight points, two blocks and two steals.

The Spartans could not bite into the CSUSM advantage. The Cougars eventually opened up their biggest lead of the night on Caisan McNamara's jumper with 3:44 remaining, 90-64.

CSUSM will face Westminster (7-5) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the final game of the CSUSM Holiday Classic. The Griffins fell to Vanguard (9-2), 76-65, in their opening game of the competition.

Vanguard will take on Trinity Western at 5:30 p.m.
