CSUSM Falls to UCLA in Final Dress Rehearsal

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Four Cougars finished in double digits but UCLA was simply too much for the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team in its 109-79 loss to the Bruins in Monday night's exhibition at Pauley Pavilion.

Malcolm Lemmons led the Cougars with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and five 3-pointers. Zack Zaragoza matched Lemmons' 5-of-11 clip from behind the arc, tallying 15 points of his own. De'End Parker recorded 12 points while Jason Johnson pitched-in with 10.

Kyle Anderson headlined the contest with a triple-double (22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists) for the Bruins. Tony Parker had a double-double of his own with 17 points and 16 boards. UCLA dominated inside in the second half, totaling 20 points on 13 offensive rebounds and outscoring the Cougars, 36-10, in the paint.

"We ran out of gas a little bit against a pretty good, prepared UCLA team. Obviously, transition defense and rebounding have been our weakness. It hurt us against San Diego State, and it definitely hurt us against UCLA. UCLA is a good team, that's why they're UCLA," said head coach Jim Saia.

"But, all in all, this is a great experience for our players to be on a stage like Pauley Pavilion. It's something I hope that they'll remember for a long time, especially the ones who have their family and friends here tonight. I think we've learned a lot about the guys we have from our two exhibitions thus far."

CSUSM would be the first to strike, taking the lead directly from the tip after Lawson won the toss over Tony Parker. Zaragoza came down and hit a 3-pointer from the right side on CSUSM's first shot of the game. After CSUSM came up empty on its next two trips, Zaragoza hit another three to help CSUSM take the lead, 6-4.

UCLA put together a 7-0 stretch to take an 11-6 lead at the first media timeout, turning a pair of turnovers into easy buckets. The Bruins extended the lead to 12, but the Cougars scored on back-to-back UCLA turnovers before Johnson hit a three from the corner to make it 22-17 at the 11:40 mark.

Zaragoza hit his third three of the game to make it 28-26 with 8:09 remaining, bringing the Cougars the closest they had been since the 16:13 mark.

Lemmons then got into the act for the Cougars, hitting a three to make it 32-29. Anderson answered with a three on the Bruins' next possession, but Lemmons came down and hit another 3-pointer with a hand in his face to make it 35-32 with just under five minutes remaining in the first stanza.

The Bruins ended the half on a 14-5 run to take a 49-39 lead at the break, capitalizing on a pair of jumpers from Anderson and two easy buckets by Zach Levine.

The Bruins came out aggressive in the second half, using their size to take advantage of the Cougars under the basket. UCLA recorded three 3-point plays on layups and fouls in the first 3:17 of the half to jump ahead, 64-45.

Jordan Adams' breakaway layup gave the Bruins their first 20-point lead, 71-51, with 13:12 remaining.

Bobby Macias did his best to will the Cougars back into it, making a tough left-handed reverse layup before finding Lemmons in the right corner on the next possession for a three that made it 79-62 at the 8:58 mark.

Macias led the Cougars with six assists. He scored nine points for the second straight game and was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

UCLA sealed the game when Tony Parker stuffed De'End Parker at the rim before Adams drained a three at the other end to make it 86-64 with 7:22 left.

However, Parker got himself a positive memory from his return trip to Pauley by hitting 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions with less than five minutes remaining. Parker played at UCLA for two games in 2011.

The Cougars played in front of an announced attendance of 4,023. CSUSM ended its preseason exhibition schedule and will move on to face Warner Pacific in its official season opener on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.
