Box Score LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team fell to Cal State L.A. 85-67 on Friday evening in the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic at the Eagles Nest.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak as the Cougars dropped to 5-4 on the season.
CSULA, a NCAA Division II institution which competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), improved to 3-0.
Sherika Miller led the Cougars with 19 points, while
Cassie Damyanovich followed with 15.
Heather Thompson recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
Miller provided the offensive punch for the Cougars in the first half by going 5-of-9 for 11 points, but CSUSM shot just 37%, Â went 2-of-10 from the free-throw stripe, and went into the half down 19, 43-24.
Damyanovich, who didn't score a point in the first half, exploded for 15 on 5-of-8 shooting in the second.
The Cougars would see the deficit grow to 21, but they did well to cut the Eagle lead to 13 at the 11:03 mark. However, CSULA quelled the threat with a 7-2 run to jump back up by 18.
CSUSM answered back with a 5-0 run of its own, but CSULA scored seven consecutive points to take a 74-54 lead with 6:42 remaining. The Cougars would get within 13 twice more, but CSULA did not let them any closer.
The Cougars committed 11 turnovers, their lowest total this year. They forced 16 CSULA turnovers.
CSUSM takes on another CCAA opponent, Cal State Dominguez Hills, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
