No. 12 CSUSM Never Trails in 80-64 Win Over Vanguard

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – De'End Parker recorded CSUSM's first double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 rebounds in the No. 12 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's 80-64 victory over Vanguard University on Saturday night at MiraCosta College.

The Cougars built a 14-0 lead to start the game and never trailed on the way to their sixth consecutive victory to start the season (6-0). Vanguard dropped to 5-2 on the year.

Parker led a CSUSM squad that shot 58.3% from the field while holding VU to just 32.8%. He went 15-of-17 from the free throw line and added a team-high four assists. Malcolm Lemmons tallied 13 points while Jason Johnson added 10.

"It's good that we're winning, but we have to work a lot on the product that we're putting out there. It's about us getting better as a team. We need to keep working hard and we're going to see what we can do against Concordia," said head coach Jim Saia.

CSUSM led by as many as 15 in the first half, but VU battled back to within four at the 3:41 mark. What looked like a walk in the park turned into a game, as CSUSM took just a six-point lead into the break, 40-34.

VU would hang within three possessions and got back within five on Chris Gorman's layup at the 10:51 mark.

Parker provided the CSUSM response.

He hit a three pointer from the corner before draining six straight free throws to put CSUSM up 14 with 5:17 left. Lemmons made a tough layup and then hit a 3-pointer to give CSUSM an insurmountable 17-point lead, 76-59, with 2:19 on the clock.

CSUSM senior forward Zack Zaragoza competed against his brother Tino, a forward for Vanguard. Zack scored nine points and added a pair of rebounds, while Tino had seven points with eight boards. Both brothers fouled out..

The Cougars will host No. 6 Concordia (Calif.) on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at MIraCosta College.
