Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – De'End Parker scored a game-high 21 points,
Jason Johnson added 19, but it would be the timely contribution of
Tyree Murray that would provide the difference in the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's 94-79 win over Olivet Nazarene on Thursday night at MiraCosta College.
CSUSM (5-0) was forced to call a timeout after ONU (1-6) cut the Cougars' nine-point advantage down to one, 62-61, at the 14:47 mark. Out of the break, Parker hit a three before finding Murray for another open 3-pointer to push CSUSM up seven.
He hit a pull-up jumper in the lane before leading a fast break that resulted in a tip-in by
Bryan Emanuel. His 3-pointer at the 11:06 mark was his eighth point in an 11-0 run that saw CSUSM take a 76-61 lead with 11:49 remaining.
The Tigers would not get back within single digits the rest of the way, and CSUSM capped off the game with a pair of breakaway dunks by
Quincy Lawson.
The Cougars shot 62.5% in the first half but would find themselves down by as much as six. However,
Malcolm Lemmons hit a 3-pointer before Parker's spot-up 3-pointer at the buzzer made it 48-48 at the break.
Johnson and
Zack Zaragoza hit 3-pointers on the Cougars' first two possessions of the second half, as CSUSM saw its lead grow to nine less than three minutes in.
Johnson had seven assists and did not turn the ball over. The Cougars followed suit and made the Tigers pay for their mistakes, scoring 29 points off 22 ONU turnovers.
Lawson recorded 13 points and was 6-of-6 from the floor.
