Cougars Ready to Pounce at A.I.I. Volleyball Championships

CSUSM enters the conference championship in Clinton, Iowa as the No. 1 seed, looking for its third straight title.

SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team will look to claim its third straight A.I.I. Conference Championship this Friday and Saturday in Clinton, Iowa, entering play as the top seed in the six-team field. The tournament winner will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
CSUSM kicks off play Friday morning with a matchup against No. 6 Indiana Northwest. The Redhawks have struggled this season, holding a 2-32 record, and have not won a set in any of their last 11 matches.
 
The Cougars will then square off against the No. 3 Rochester, who enters the tournament with a 25-24 record. The Warriors rank ninth in the NAIA in service aces per set (2.15), and have won five of their last eight games.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals Saturday, with the winner of Pool A playing the runner-up in Pool B, and vice versa.

CSUSM is the two-time defending champions, having gone 8-0 in tournament play over the last two years, including three-set sweeps in all four of its matches last season. Tournament host and No. 2 Ashford (21-15) figures to be the toughest test for the Cougars as they look to earn a spot in the NAIA National Championships for the third time. CSUSM defeated the Saints 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 in the conference semifinals last season behind 15 kills, 13 digs, and three blocks from eventual A.I.I. tournament MVP Taylor DeGraaf.
