Box Score IRVINE, Calif.— No. 1 Concordia put the No. 25 Cal State San Marcos volleyball team's season best six-game win streak to a quick halt Thursday evening at CU Arena, dropping the Cougars 25-17, 25-4, 25-22.
Facing the defending NAIA national champion Eagles is a tough task for any opponent, as the win marks Concordia's 51
st straight victory and 77
th out of their past 78 matches. The only time the Eagles have lost during that stretch was the 2011 NAIA national championship match.
After playing Concordia tough at home a few weeks ago and threatening to take two out of the three sets, the Cougars got off to a great start leading 11-8 in the first set. However, the Eagles rallied to take the next eight points and win the set with relative ease.
The second set got worse for CSUSM, as the Cougars trailed early 9-4 before Concordia turned on the jets and won the set's final 16 points. The four points scored in the second set were the lowest total in program history for San Marcos, and the team hit -.276 on the set with just one kill and nine errors.
It appeared the third set would be more of the same after Concordia quickly took a 10-1 lead in the third set, but the Cougars never gave in, fighting back within two at 24-22 before Concordia's Kaitlyn Platt finished off the match with a kill.
Rachel Hadley led the Cougars with seven kills, while libero
Kelli McLin picked up a team high 10 digs.
Alyssa Foster had 17 assists, while
Erin Talafus had a game high four blocks.
CSUSM dropped to 19-8 on the season with the loss, while Concordia improved to 13-0 on the year. The Cougars have the weekend off before facing San Diego Christian in El Cajon Wednesday evening at 7:00pm.
