Box Score FULLERTON, Calif.—The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team bounced back from a close defeat Friday night against No. 16 Vanguard to win convincingly on the road Saturday at Hope International, taking the contest 25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16.
The Cougars were led by outstanding offense performances by
Taylor DeGraaf and
Markisha Henderson-Diaz, and were lights out defensively with 11 blocks at the net four players recording at least 10 digs. DeGraaf led all scorers with 18 kills and a team best 19 kills, while Henderson-Diaz tallied nine kills and match best eight blocks.
As a team, the Cougars hit .252 on the match, compared to just .091 for the Royals.
Jacqui DesLauriers, a junior who grew up in San Marcos, had a breakout performance with a season best seven kills and a .538 hitting percentage.
After taking the first set without much doubt, the Cougars led just 12-11 in the second set before rallying off seven straight points to take a commanding 19-11 lead and grab a two sets to none lead.
In the third set, the teams were knotted at 20 apiece but Hope International held strong to force a fourth set. In the final set, the teams were tied at 11-11 before the Cougars closed out the match with 14 of the final 19 points.
Alyssa Foster recorded 40 assists on the match, and combined with the 997 she had entering Saturday's game, the junior from Portland, Oregon now has reached three consecutive seasons with 1,000 assists. Her 1,037 assists on the season rank ninth in the NAIA.
CSUSM improves to 22-9 with the victory, while Hope International now stands a 5-15 on the year.
CSUSM will get one more regular season chance to knock off a ranked opponent Tuesday as they head to Santa Barbara for a match against No. 17 Westmont, who they defeated 3-1 earlier this season. The Cougars will then wrap up the regular season with a road match Saturday night at La Sierra in Riverside.
