SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team will be participating in its third American Cancer Society's Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk this Sunday, October 20 at Balboa Park in downtown San Diego.
Breast cancer, the second-most common cancer among women in the United States, is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. The four-mile walk is intended to raise funds for research to find cures for all types of cancer.
CSUSM women's basketball is hoping to raise at least $2500 for the cause. To make a donation, visit the

The walk hits close to home for head coach Sheri Jennum. Jennum's personal journey began in January 2012 during CSUSM's inaugural season, when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. After treatment, Jennum became one of the more 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
"During my treatment, I was fortunate to be surrounded by my amazing family, heath care workers and other patients who made the journey so much easier for me," said Jennum. "I am proud to say I have taken part in this particular walk for over a decade, and I will be walking again on that Sunday morning for my family members, former coaches, colleagues and friends who have been impacted by cancer."
A detailed account of Jennum's battle can be read

Sunday's event has over 6,000 participants, 700 teams and has raised over $500,000 as of Wednesday.
