Emanuel’s Hot Hand Lifts Cougars to Seventh Straight Win

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Bryan Emanuel scored a game-high 15 points and the No. 10 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team topped Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday night at MiraCosta College, 74-54, to earn its seventh win in a row.

Emanuel went 4-of-5 from 3-point land and scored 12 consecutive points for CSUSM in a 12-4 run that handed the Cougars an insurmountable 65-41 lead with 5:14 left to play.

Quincy Lawson added 14 points, Danny Redmon tallied 11, and AJ Gasporra followed with 10 as CSUSM (15-4) registered its 10th win in its last 11 games. The Cougars shot 11-of-22 from behind the arc and forced 19 Sagehen turnovers.

“I thought we executed defensively but struggled with our energy on the offensive end. Overall it was a good victory against a well-coached team,” said CSUSM head coach Jim Saia.

The Cougars never trailed in the contest and used a 12-0 run to take a 21-8 lead at the 7:59 mark of the first half. Gasporra started the run with a 3-pointer and Redmon capped the stretch with a three of his own.

Adam Eakles laid in an easy deuce off a feed from Redmon before Gasporra hit his second 3-ball of the game to push the Cougars up by 15 at the 2:44 mark.

The Cougars took a 14-point advantage into the break, but the Sagehens were able to pull within 37-27 5:45 into the second stanza.

However, it would be the closest PP would get. Leading by 16, Emanuel hit a three from the left corner before hitting another from the right baseline to make it 60-41. The next trip down the floor, he hit his final 3-pointer from the left elbow and followed it with a tough break-away layup to make CSUSM's lead 24.

Kyle McAndrews led PP (9-4) with 14 points while Jake Klewer added 10. The Sagehens are a NCAA Division III program.

CSUSM is now 9-1 on its “home” floor.

The Cougars resume play next Monday against Pacific Union in Angwin, Calif. at 7:30 p.m.
