The Year Ahead
The 2013 CSUSM baseball team will have an overwhelmingly new look when it takes the field for the first time on Friday against Concordia. 21 new faces – nine freshmen and 12 transfers – join 14 returners for the campaign in a group that features just five every day starters from a year ago – outfielders
Kyle Secciani and
Adam Tapia, pitchers
James Dykstra and
Frank Charlton, and third baseman
Kenny Belzer. 35 of the 44 contests for the Cougars will be at their home field, where CSUSM went 15-12 a year ago.
2012 At A Glance
The Cougars went 26-23 overall in 2012 and fell in the second round of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament to Jamestown (N.D.). 17 players from last year's squad have moved on.
James Dykstra was named A.I.I. Pitcher of the Year and
Austin Coleman was named A.I.I. Player of the Year. Eight players were named to the all-conference team.
Previewing Concordia
The Eagles come into this weekend's series 2-1 on the year after taking two of three from Arizona Christian last weekend. CSUSM went 1-2 against CUI when the Eagles were ranked No. 2 in the country in 2012; the Cougars are 3-8 all-time versus the Eagles. Dillion Bryant went 5-for-12 (.417) and Ty Holm went 4-for-10 (.400) with a homerun against ACU. Cole Swanson pitched a complete-game one-hitter while striking out 14 in CUI's 4-2 win over the Firestorm in the season opener.
The First Look
CSUSM played its first game action of the year on Saturday, Jan. 25 against NCAA Division II-foe UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark. Dykstra pitched three innings of one-hit ball and Belzer hit a homerun, but the Cougars fell victim to a six-run fifth inning in an eventual 7-3 loss.
CSUSM-SDCC Rescheduled, Feb. 9
