Record Night Hands No. 9 CSUSM 10th Straight Win

Five Cougars finish in double figures as CSUSM sets school record for points and win margin against UCSC.

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif.  – The No. 9 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team won its 10th game in a row while setting a school record for points and win margin in a 99-56 victory over UC Santa Cruz on Friday night at MiraCosta College.

Leading by eight at the half, CSUSM (18-4) used a 27-4 run over the first seven minutes of the second frame to open up a 31-point advantage and put the game out of reach. CSUSM's 99 points bettered the previous school record of 96 set against UC Merced on Dec. 28, 2012, and the 44-point win bested CSUSM's previous win-margin record of 40 against Lethbridge on Dec. 29, 2012 (93-53).

Five players finished in double digits for the Cougars, led by point guard Danny Redmon who finished with a game-high 19 on 8-of-10 shooting. Quincy Lawson registered a double-double by halftime on his way to a 12 point, 12 rebound performance, while Jose Rivera pitched in with 15 on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Adam Eakles and AJ Gasporra tallied 12 points apiece.

Lawson's double-double was the first of the season for any CSUSM player.

CSUSM opened the game on an 11-0 run, but UCSC (6-13) answered with three 3-pointers on three of their next four possessions to pull within 13-11 at the 15:06 mark. The Cougars would not relinquish the lead and Rivera handed the Cougars a 27-18 lead with a four-point play with 6:27 remaining.

UCSC pulled within three, but CSUSM answered with a 9-4 run to take a 41-33 lead into the break.

The Cougars opened the second half 10-of-13 from the field, scoring the first 11 points of the second stanza before its 27-4 stretch handed them a 68-37 advantage with 13:26 remaining. Kelly Lord's tip-in off a feed from Gasporra made the lead 40 at the 7:35 mark.

Up 88-54 with 5:02 remaining, the story quickly became whether or not the Cougars would reach triple digits for the first time in school history.

Adam Alfaro hit a pair of 3-pointers and Lord added another layup to tie the school record for points at 96 with 2:03 left. Jeremy Ford would break the record with his first points of the night on a layup with the right hand to make it 98-56.

Interestingly enough, it was Ford who converted the basket for the previous school record for points when he tallied the 96th point of the night against UC Merced in December.

CSUSM had an opportunity to reach 100 when Ford was fouled and sent to the line with 22 seconds remaining, but the senior forward missed the first before draining the second to cap-off the 99-56 score line.

All 10 Cougars scored for the second consecutive game, eight players shot better than 50-percent on the night and CSUSM finished a 57.9-percent clip from the field.

The Banana Slugs shot just 37.3-percent from the floor and were forced into 27 total turnovers by the Cougars. Trent Reeves led UCSC with 17 points.

CSUSM hosts La Sierra (4-20) in an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game on Thursday, January 31st at 7:30 p.m.
