Make It Eight
CSUSM won its eighth-straight game to extend its program-best winning streak with a 75-64 win over Pacific Union College on Jan. 14 in Angwin, Calif. The Cougars have not lost since Dec. 8 against defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) and have now won 11 of its last 12 since Nov. 30. CSUSM also won five games  in a row between Nov. 9 and 20 earlier this season.

AJ is A-Okay
Senior guard AJ Gasporra led the Cougars in scoring for the fifth time in his first six games, totaling 18 on 5-for-12 shooting against the Pioneers on Jan. 14. Gasporra, who scored a season-high 28 on Dec. 29 in a blowout of Lethbridge, is averaging 20.3 points per game while shooting 53-percent from the field. His 92.3% clip from the free throw line is nearly 20 percentage points higher than the next CSUSM player with three or more free throw attempts on the year (Adam Alfaro, 12-of-16, 75%).

PLNU-CSUSM The First Time Around
Danny Redmon sparked the Cougars in their 51-46 win over the Sea Lions earlier this season on Dec. 5 with a career-high 24 points, five rebounds and three assists. Down 30-20 three minutes into the second half, Redmon scored 12 points in a 14-3 run to hand the Cougars the lead for good, 34-33, with 12:39 remaining. The contest was a physical, defensive battle, as CSUSM held PLNU to 29.6% shooting on the night while posting a 40.0% clip itself. The Cougars scored a season-low 51 points in the win, but held PLNU to the lowest scoring total of any CSUSM opponent this season, as well.

A Look at UC Santa Cruz
The Banana Slugs, a NCAA Division III squad, enter Friday's game winners of two of their last four. Trent Reeves and James Townsend lead UCSC with 11.9 PPG and 9.9 PPG, respectively. UCSC and CSUSM have never met. However, UCSC is 1-2 against common opponents (UC Merced, Pomona-Pitzer, The Master's College) this season, while CSUSM has gone 3-0.

Number 9, Number 9, Number 9…
CSUSM slipped one spot in the fifth regular season edition of the 2012-13 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll on Tuesday, falling to No. 9 after its school-record No. 8 billing last week. The Cougars received 210 points, two behind No. 8 William Carey (Miss.) and 19 behind No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). CSUSM has been ranked in the top 25 every week this season and has spent the last three weeks inside the top 10. The Cougars were also No. 9 in the Dec. 4, 2012 poll.  CSUSM is currently ranked No. 1 in the Unaffiliated – A.I.I./CCAC Group Poll ahead of West Virginia Tech and Robert Morris (Ill.).
