POMONA, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team took kept things interesting but could not quite upset either Point Loma Nazarene or Cal Poly Pomona in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational Friday afternoon. The Cougars are the lone NAIA squad competing in the tournament of NCAA Division II universities, but grabbed a set in each match before eventually falling.
CSUSM started the day strong by taking the first set against Point Loma before losing 25-22, 23-25, 14-25, 21-25. Senior outside hitter
Lindsey Sappington turned in yet another strong performance with a team high 12 kills and a .409 hitting percentage, while
Taylor DeGraaf just missed a double-double with 9
kills and a team high 12 digs.
Alyssa Foster continued to do an excellent job distributing the ball for the Cougars with 38 assists, but the team was undone by a disproportionate 16 service errors to just two service aces.
In the later game against tournament host Cal Poly Pomona, the Cougars were unable to put away offensive chances, hitting just .087 on the match and falling 19-25, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25.
On the bright side, CSUSM was able to create 8 blocks, with
Kelli McLin and
Kara Barkdoll each setting a school record with six block assists.
Taylor DeGraaf and
Jaycee Arthur led the team with 10 kills apiece.
The Cougars (11-5) will finish the tournament Saturday with matches against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2:00 pm and Cal State LA at 7:00 pm.
