SAN MARCOS, Calif.-- The Cal State San Marcos women's volleyball team received a loud ovation from the Blue Crew student section in their much anticipated home opener, but despite playing undefeated Concordia tight, the Cougars were unable to pull off the upset victory Tuesday night in front of nearly 400 fans in attendance.
The No. 10 Cougars, who had been 3-0 against ranked NAIA opponents this season, got on the board first with back to back kills by Andi Vorderman and
Kelli McLin to take a 2-0 advantage. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived, and the Cougars played each of the three sets seemingly trailing by just a few points throughout but fell 20-25, 21-25, 21-25.
No. 2 ranked Concordia did an excellent job controlling the net, with 10 players standing over six feet tall, but the difference maker for the Eagles was 5'11” outside hitter Brooke Marino, who finished with 14 kills and 13 digs.
For the Cougars,
Andi Vordermann and
Taylor DeGraaf led the team in kills with eight apiece, and setter
Alyssa Foster had a solid all around game with four kills, a .500 hitting percentage, 23 assists, six digs, and three blocks. Libero
Nichole May went horizontal several times to record a team high 11 digs on the match.
The Cougars (13-6) will look to bounce back against another difficult opponent, taking on NCAA Division II opponent Cal Baptist on the road Friday at 5:00 pm. Prior to Tuesday's loss, CSUSM won two consecutive games against NCAA Division II opponents Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles.
