The #2 ranked Cal State San Marcos Softball team made an emphatic statement to the field at the A.I.I. Championships and the rest of the NAIA, jumping all over #9 ranked Houston-Victoria at the conference championship in Columbus, Georgia.
The Cougars got things started in the first with an RBI single by
Alyssa Dronenburg, then added on two more in the second with Sarah Quimbao's first home run of the season, and second of her career.
San Marcos essentially locked up the game in the third inning with back-to-back solo homeruns by Dronenburg and
Alex Miller in the fifth, giving them a 5-0 lead.
With the way
Cortney Allen was pitching, that was all the Cougars would need. Still, the Cougar offense was not done for the afternoon.
CSUSM piled up 12 hits total in just 6 innings, and pushed the score to 10-0 after a 5-run sixth inning.
Cortney Allen mowed down hitters all day, striking out 7 batters and allowing just one hit in the fourth inning and a walk in the sixth. Allen, who was named A.I.I. Pitcher of the Year, is now 19-4 on the season and has not allowed a run in 11.1 innings this tournament.
With the victory, CSUSM advances to tomorrow's final of the A.I.I. Tournament, and earns an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
