Baseball’s Coleman, Dykstra named A.I.I. Player and Pitcher of Year

Cougars receive 5 First-Team and 2 Second-Team honors


The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team walked away with a handful of A.I.I. First-Team Selections, led by Conference Player of the Year Austin Coleman and Pitcher of the Year James Dykstra.

Coleman, a sure-gloved third baseman led San Marcos with 13 homeruns and 53 RBIs, in addition to hitting .351 on the season. A senior in 2012, Austin was 15th in the NAIA in total homeruns and 17th in doubles.

Dykstra, a junior right handed pitcher, led CSUSM with a 2.89 ERA in a team high 90.1 innings, and finished his first season with the Cougars with a 7-2 record. Dykstra was among the top 40 nationally in hits allowed per 9 innings (6.87), innings pitched per game (6.45), and opponent's batting average (.214).

Another junior, first baseman Kenny Belzer also received first team recognition after hitting .306 with 23 extra base hits on the year, in addition to some solid innings on the mound.

CSUSM had two other players named to the first team in senior outfielder Anthony Renteria, who hit .331 with 12 homeruns and 46 RBIs, and senior second baseman Trent Jemmett (.342 batting average), the team leader in stolen bases with 16 and the only Cougar with more walks than strikeouts. Jemmett was also a first team selection in 2011.

Another first-team selection from 2011 back again this season for San Marcos was center fielder Kyle Secciani. Secciani hit .288 for the Cougars this season and played excellent defense as always, which earned him a second-team selection in 2012. Also receiving recognition on the second team was shortstop Jeremy Baum , who hit .349 with a .523 slugging percentage.
