Baseball splits with Arizona Christian to end regular season

Cougars finish season 27-20

The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team wrapped up regular season play on Saturday, splitting a pair of games against Arizona Chrstian for the second straight day. The Cougars (27-20) will move on to the postseason as the #1 seed in the A.I.I. Tournament at San Marcos starting Wednesday, May 2.

Game 1

Facing the Firestorm of Arizona Christian for the third game in a row, the Cougars took care of business early and often in game 1.
 
After a scoreless 1st inning by both teams the Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd with a 3-run home run by Kenny Belzer. Belzer went on to hit a 2nd home run in the game as well bringing his total for the season to 7. A third home run was hit in the game by outfielder Marcus Meraz, the first of his season and put the Cougars up 10-0 after 7 innings.
 
The starting pitcher Frank Charlton was lights out for the Cougars through his 5 innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out 7 while walking none. Shawn Sanford, Geoffrey Landry, Jackson Gaskins, and Seth Smith combined to pitch the final 4 innings, and get the win for CSUSM. Cougar pitchers combined to strike out 10 of the 34 Firestorm batters.
 
San Marcos improved to 27-19 on the year, while Arizona Christian dropped to 28-20. Both teams will play again in game 2 today, as well as later in the week in the AII conference tournament.

Game 2

Cougars got off to a roaring start in 1st inning with a three-run homer from SS Jeremy Baum. Starting Pitcher Kevin Hilton was only able to go 2.2 and surrendered 4 runs back to the Firestorm before departing in the third in favor of Kenny Belzer who was able to get the last out in the third to stop he bleeding. However the next inning Arizona Christian right fielder Alex Glenn hit a three run home run giving the Firestorm 8 runs on the day. A lead CSUSM would cut into in the bottom half of the inning. Corey McCloskey had an RBI single and Kyle Secciani added an RBi single as well to cut the deficit to three going into the 5th inning.
 
Arizona Christian pitcher Jack Sherman closed out the Cougars in the 6th and 7th giving the Firestorm an 8-6 victory.
