#2 Softball takes three of four on Northern California road trip

Cougars sweep doubleheader against Patten and split with Simpson

The #2 ranked Cal State San Marcos Softball team extended their winning streak to 13 with two wins over Patten before dropping a rare game against Simpson, but rebounded to win the final game against the Red Hawks to improve to 45-4 on the season.

In the first game against Patten, the Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning en route to a run-rule victory. Alicia Ingram went 4-for-4 in stolen bases, and Kaitlin McGinley went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 stolen bases of her own. Freshman Olivia Lucatuorto and Caitlin Monnahan each knocked a homerun, and Alex Miller also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Starting pitcher Cortney Allen improved to 17-3 with three innings of 2-hit softball.

In the final game versus Patten, freshman Kimberle Smith recorded the best day at the plate for any Cougar this season, going 3-for-3 with 2 homeruns and a double. On top of that, Smith also lowered her ERA to 0.72, which is 2nd in all the NAIA. Alyssa Dronenburg slammed her 16th homerun of the year, moving her into a tie for 5th in the nation with teammate Theresa Houle. Jourdan Lamoureux picked up her 7th win of the season after 4 innings without allowing an earned run.

In Game 1 against Simpson, the Cougars looked to be in control after solo homeruns by Alyssa Dronenburg (17th of season) and Alex Miller put them up 2-0 after four innings. However, the Red Hawks scored 5 unearned runs in the 5th inning to take the lead, and added another 2 in the 6th to secure the upset.

CSUSM battled back in the final game against Simpson by pounding 14 hits, highlighted by 2 doubles and a triple by Kaitlin McGinley. Cortney Allen allowed just 1 hit in her 4 innings pitched as the Cougars finished the season 5-1 on the season against Simpson.

The Cougars will wrap up their final regular season games Monday on the road against William Jessup.
