The Cal State San Marcos Track teams had several athletes compete at this week's Mt. Sac Relays, highlighted by a fantastic performance by senior
Suzanne Cornwell in the 5000m. Cornwell ran 16:39.94, placing 4th in her heat, and breaking Cady Villareal's previous school record of 17:03.27 set in 2009.
The Cougars also had two other runners compete well in the 5000m in
Kelly Thompson (17:10.10) and
Chelsey Cortez (17:10.55). The trio of Cornwell, Thompson, and Cortez are ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the NAIA for the 5000m this season.
Earlier Friday, the women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays competed, running times of 47.13 and 3:51.80 respectively. Individually,
Ashley Jsames ran 1:03.32 in the 400 hurdles, and
Amber Rosario ran 14.41 in the 100 hurdles. Both Jsames and Rosario were members of each relay as well.
In Thursday's action, steeplechaser Danny Lyon ran his best time of the season at 9:13, and is now ranked #5 in the NAIA.
Western Nelson, who has already qualified for nationals in the marathon, hit the NAIA 'A' standard the 10000m with his time of 30:33.
The Men's track and field team will compete at Saturday at the Soka Invitational, and both teams with compete again Saturday, April 28th at the
Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine.
