Former Cal State San Marcos All-American and current Assistant Coach Whitney Patton braved dangerously warm temperatures in the 2012 Boston Marathon, finishing 41
st in the world's most renowned marathon on Monday.
Patton ran the 26.2-mile race in just over 3 hours, with an official time of 3:03.42. Though the times were slower due to the extreme heat, Whitney averaged 7:01 per mile throughout the distance. This was Patton's first time running in Boston, and she was quoted in an article on Boston.com as saying "The crowd was awesome, so beautiful. Nothing compares to this. LA is a little similar, but this is just so beautiful. Nothing can compare."
Only 8 of the top 25 finishers were United States citizens, making Whitney one of the top American finishers in the event and someone to watch out for in an Olympic Trials year. Her race splits are listed below:

Fellow CSUSM Alum and Assistant Coach Casey Evans also qualified for the marathon and competed Monday. The Cougars have 1 male athlete and 3 female athletes already qualified for the marathon at the NAIA National Championships this year, and may have more after Sunday's San Luis Rey River Half-Marathon in San Marcos.
