Softball Slams La Sierra on Senior Day

Cougars set school record for margin of victory in Game 2.

The #2 ranked Cal State San Marcos Women's Softball team rolled over La Sierra 8-0 and 19-0 to pick up their 10th and 11th consecutive victories Sunday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars tied a school record for runs in the second game with 19, and had 18 in just the first two innings alone. San Marcos has scored 19 runs just one other time, winning 19-15 in a wild game against Redlands last season.

Game 1 (CSUSM 8 – La Sierra 0)

Pitcher Cortney Allen allowed just one baserunner all game, giving up a lone single in 4 innings of shutout ball. Allen struck out 4 in earning her 15th win, and the Cougars supported her with 8 runs on 11 hits offensively.   

Leading the way was Kim Smith, who reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Smith also pitched the final inning for the Cougars, lowering her season ERA to 0.77.

Senior Theresa Houle ripped her 15th homerun of the season in the game, and center fielder Alex Miller smacked her 16th double of the year. Freshman Jessica Guillen ended the game in the 5th inning by run rule with an RBI single that pushed the score to 8.

Game 2 (CSUSM 19 – La Sierra 0)

The Cougars came out fired up after the Senior Day festivities that took place before the second game, scoring 5 runs in the first inning, and piling up 13 runs before recording an out in the second inning. By the end of the second inning the score was 18-0, and each of the seniors received a large ovation from the home crowd as the exited in the top of the third inning.

Seniors Theresa Houle and Alyssa Dronenburg hit their 16th and 15th homeruns of the year, respectively, pushing each into the top 5 in all the NAIA. Fellow senior Alicia Ingram went 2-for-3 and stole her 2nd and 3rd bases of the day, giving her 33 on the season.

Freshman Kimberle Smith and Olivia Lucatuorto each picked up 3 hits, including two doubles by Smith. The Cougars hit 6 doubles in all.

CSUSM (42-3) will play three more doubleheaders in Northern California April 21st -23rd to wrap up the regular season. The Cougars will be the #1 seed in the A.I.I. Conference Championships May 3rd-5th in Columbus, GA.
