Cal State San Marcos Baseball and Point Loma Nazarene split a closely contested non-conference doubleheader, as the Cougars finished strong late in both one-run games.

Game 1 (Point Loma 11 – CSUSM 10)

Box Score

The Cougars dug themselves into a 5-run hole in the first inning, but never gave up, nearly clawing their way back in the ninth inning when they placed the tying run on 2nd and the winning run on 1st base. Shortstop Jeremy Baum crushed a ball to deep center field that was caught at the wall with one out that would have won the game, but despite 5 runs in the final frame, the Cougars could not complete the comeback, and fell 11-10.

Each team drew 11 walks in the high scoring affair, and the Cougars racked up 13 hits as well. Second baseman Michael Mecucci went 3-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, and first baseman Kenny Belzer hit a 2-RBI double and walked 3 times, scoring three runs on the afternoon. Belzer also threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

Game 2  (CSUSM 3 – Point Loma 2) *7 innings

Box Score

The Cal State San Marcos came up big in the late innings once again, but this time the Cougars were able to pull off the road victory to split the doubleheader. Starting pitcher James Dykstra allowed just two hits and one earned run in a complete game victory that improved his record to 6-1.

Offensively, the Cougars got their first run on a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning the cut the deficit to just one run. In the sixth, CSUSM tied the game after a pair of singles and an RBI fielder's choice from Kyle Secciani.

The winning run was scored in the 7th inning on a leadoff homerun by Anthony Renteria, his team leading 11th of the season. James Dykstra allowed a two-out walk in the bottom half of the inning, but got the next batter to fly out to center field to close out the win.

The Cougars are now 22-17 on the year, and play next Saturday, April 21st at home against Fresno Pacific starting at 11:00 am.
