Game 1 (SDC 5 – CSUSM 3)

Box Score

The Cougars rebounded from an early deficit to retake the lead 2-1 after scoring a pair of runs on RBI singles by Anthony Renteria and Austin Coleman in the bottom of the third inning.

However, the Hawks responded back with 3 more runs of their own in the top of the fourth, and the Cougars never regained the lead, despite cutting the lead to one on Austin Coleman's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The Cougars were outhit 14 to 5 but did an excellent job keeping the game close throughout.

Mark Ortivez and Trent Jemmett each doubled in the game, and Darren Gay fell to 3-2 on the season, allowing 4 earned runs despite striking out 6 over 6 1/3 innings.

Game 2  (CSUSM 7 – SDC 6) * 7 innings

Box Score

CSUSM once again fell behind early 2-0 before coming right back to tie the score at 2 in the bottom of the second. The score would remain even until the top of the fifth inning, when San Diego Christian put up 4 runs to take a 6-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, second baseman Michael Mecucci saved a run with a terrific diving play to throw out the runner at first and end the half of the inning— stopping the Hawk momentum. In the bottom of the frame, Mecucci showed his skill at the plate as well, ripping a single to left that ignited a 5 run inning that gave the Cougars the lead. Mecucci reached in all 3 of his plate appearances.

Catcher Mark Ortivez also had a perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk, and knocked an RBI single during the rally to cut the lead to two. Trent Jemmett tied the game with a 2 RBI double, and then took third on the throw home. Jemmett then scored on the same play when Hawk catcher Nick Bando threw the ball away trying to throw Jemmett out, giving the Cougars a 7-6 lead.

Closer Andrew Larson closed out the final half inning, striking out 3 to end the game and picking up his 7th save. Freshman reliever Jackson Gaskins earned his first career win with a scoreless sixth inning.

The Cougars (20-12) will play San Diego Christian (16-21) again tomorrow at home in another doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
