The Cal State San Marcos pitching staff combined to strike out a program best 17 batters en route to a convincing win over the University of Sioux Falls Tuesday afternoon at the CSUSM Baseball Field. San Marcos also racked up 17 hits in the 15-5 victory—the fourth win in a row for the team.
Starting Pitcher
Frank Charlton set the tone for CSUSM at the start of the game, striking out 5 batters in his two scoreless innings of work. The Cougars chose to split innings between the bullpen the rest of the way, and it proved to be an effective strategy. 5 different relievers combined to strike out an additional 12 batters over the final 7 innings, as just 10 outs were allowed by
a ball put in play.
Offensively, 5 different Cougars had multi-hit games, including third baseman
Austin Coleman, who went 3-for-5 with a homerun, and double, and drove in 5 RBIs on the game. Coleman's home run in the 7
th inning was the first homerun this season to hit the Jack in the Box Scoreboard in deep left field, almost clearing it altogether.
Several other Cougars had nice days at the plate as well, including
Trent Jemmett, who was a perfect 5-for-5 in getting on base, roping two singles and drawing 3 walks. Leadoff hitter
Kyle Secciani went 3-for-5 with a walk, and also picked up his 6
th double of the year.
Freshman
Seth Smith (1-0) earned his first career victory, going an inning and a third without giving up a hit. The Cougars will play next in Phoenix Friday and Saturday as they will take on conference member Arizona Christian for back-to-back doubleheaders starting at 12:00 pm.
