Cal State San Marcos and Azusa Pacific baseball battled tight through 9 innings, but the Cougars were unable to come away with the victory Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Azusa Pacific jumped out with two early runs in the first, but San Marcos responded in the second inning with two runs of their own, aided by a pair of Azusa Pacific errors.

CSUSM gave up another run in the 3rd, and each team scored in the 5th to make the score 4-3 after 5. Cougars starter James Dykstra went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, all earned, and struck out 2.

Azusa Pacific starting pitcher Jacob Cage left after the sixth as well, and it became a battle of the bullpens after that. The score remained 4-3 until the 9th inning, when pinch hitter Trevor Lothrop hit a 2-run homerun on the first pitch he saw, making the score 6-3. CSUSM was unable to respond in the bottom half, and the Cougars fell to 9-6 on the season.

Outfielder Anthony Renteria went 2-for-4 with a double, and third baseman Austin Coleman had a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars will play Azusa Pacific again tomorrow in a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific.
