The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team spilt a pair of home games Thursday afternoon at the CSUSM Baseball Field, falling 8-5 in the first game and winning 3-2 in the second one.

Game 1 (Biola 8- CSUSM 5)

Box Score

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Jeremy Baum RBI single, but then watched as the Eagles put up six runs between the 2nd and 4th innings, leaving them down 6-1.

CSUSM battled back with a run in the 6th inning on a Kenny Belzer bloop RBI's single that just got over the tip of Biola First Baseman Mac Sullivan's glove and cut the deficit to 4. The Cougars would storm back with 3 more runs in the 7th inning, ignited by centerfielder Kyle Secciani's second triple of the game to make the score 6-5.

Despite the impressive rally to trim the lead to one, the Cougars went down quietly in the 8th and 9th innings, and Biola added two more runs in the ninth to make the final score 8-5. Frank

Charlton earned the loss, and dropped to 2-2 on the season. CSUSM Reliever Richard Martin had a 4-inning stretch where he held Biola hitless until he gave up a leadoff double in the 9thinning.

Game 2 (CSUSM 3 – Biola 2) *7 innings

Box Score

CSUSM once again darted out to a 1-0 lead in the first on another Jeremy Baum single, and followed it up with another run in the second on Michael Mecucci's 2nd home run of the season- a blast that nearly hit the scoreboard out in left-center.

With the way Cougars starting pitcher Darren Gay was pitching, it looked like the lead would hold. Gay exited after 5 innings and struck out 3 while allowing just 1 run. However, Biola scraped together a run without a hit in the top of the 6th to even the score at 2.

The Cougars rallied right back in the bottom half of the sixth as Kenny Belzer hit a two-out triple to bring home Anthony Renteria for the tie-breaking run. Andrew Larson closed out the 7th and final inning with 3 straight groundouts after issuing a leadoff walk to record his 3rd save of the year. Freshman reliever Kevin Hilton (1-0) picked up his first career win, pitching a hitless inning in the 6th.

The Cougars (12-11) will face Biola (13-14) again tomorrow in another doubleheader up in La Mirada, CA starting at 12:00 pm.
