Box Score

The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team picked up where it left off Friday, racking up hits, pitching well, and playing great defense, rolling to a victory that seemed more decisive than the score indicated.

Starting Pitcher Scott Myers was excellent, allowing just 2 bunt singles and an unearned run in 5 innings of work, striking out 6 batters. Shaun Sanford, Kevin Hilton, and Andrew Larson allowed just one hit and a walk the rest of the way, shutting down the Oak offense completely.

The Cougars were led on offense by left fielder Anthony Renteria, who went 4-5 at the plate with a run scored and 2 RBI's. First Baseman Kenny Belzer also had a clutch RBI triple that brought in a big insurance run in the 7th inning to extend the lead to 3-1.

Reliever Shaun Sanford (1-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of hitless baseball. Andrew Larson (S,1) earned the save with a perfect 9th inning, striking out 2 batters in the process.

Box Score

Things got off to a great start for the Cougars, who jumped out to an early lead in the 1st on a Anthony Renteria homerun that was crushed to right field. Kenny Belzer joined the homerun party in the 2nd, booming a ball well over the left field wall.

The Cougars kept the offense rolling in the next two innings, extending their lead to 8-0 after just 4 innings. The score remained the same until the 7th inning, and it looked like smooth sailing for San Marcos.

It was not to be however, as Menlo's bats woke up as they were on the cusp of being swept. The Oaks inched closer by scoring 6 runs in the 7th inning, highlighted by a Michael Brandi bases-clearing triple.

Third Baseman Austin Coleman extended the Cougar lead back to 4 with a 2-run double, making the score 10-6.

Andrew Larson, who got CSUSM out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th inning, and had recorded the save earlier in the day, was sent in to close out the game. The Oaks were ready, and batted around in the 9th, knocking in hits to tie the game and take the lead all with 2 outs. Kevin Hilton, who pitched well in both yesterday's and the morning game, was sent in to close the door but by the time the inning was over San Marcos was down 12-10.

The Cougars made it exciting in the bottom of the 9th, having runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out after Anthony Renteria's 3rd hit of the evening. Renteria fell just a triple short of the cycle. Austin Coleman brought home one run with a sac fly, but that's all the Cougars were able to come up with, leaving the final score at 12-11.
