The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team got off to a quick start and piled up 10 hits Friday, but fell to Vanguard 6-4 in the first of three games between the teams this weekend.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the second inning on a Kenny Belzer RBI single to left field that brought in 2 runs. The Lions roared back in the bottom half of the inning, plating 3 runners to make the score 3-2 Vanguard after 2.

Trent Jemmett tied the game at 3 in the third inning after singling and then eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Vanguard took the lead once again in the 4th inning, but the Cougars rallied back to tie in the 6th inning on a 2-out RBI Triple from Kyle Secciani that brought home Kenny Belzer.

CSUSM starting pitcher James Dykstra lasted until the 7th inning, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing 5 earned runs, but a leadoff walk in the 7th came around to score on a single off of reliever Shawn Sanford, putting the Lions up a run. Vanguard tacked on another run in the 8th to make it 6-4, and CSUSM made it interesting by loading the bases in the 9th, but came away empty handed.

Shortstop Jeremy Baum reached base in all five plate appearances Friday, going 3 for 3 on the day and was hit by a pitch twice. The Cougars are now 9-3 on the season, and will come home for games two and three of the weekend series against Vanguard starting in San Marcos Saturday at 11:00 am.
