CSUSM defeats Holy Names 10-0 and Cal Baptist 6-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Cal State San Marcos Softball Team scored a couple of impressive and meaningful victories, shutting out a pair of opponents that have special meaning to the Cougars.

Game 1 (CSUSM 10 – Holy Names 0)

Box Score

A day after losing a tough extra inning game against Holy Names, the Cougars came back to shut the Hawks out, pounding out 10 runs in game cut short by the mercy rule.

Kimberle Smith (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just 3 hits in 5 innings, striking out 3 Holy Names batters. The Cougars slammed 4 homeruns, including 2 by Alex Miller, who went 3-for-3 with 5 RBI's. Alyssa Dronenburg and Theresa Houle each homered as well.

Game 2 (CSUSM 6 – Cal Baptist 0)

Box Score

The Cougars were able to get the best of Cal Baptist, who was the NAIA runner-up last year and ranked #1 most of last season before moving to NCAA Division II this year. Cal Baptist beat CSUSM with a walkoff homerun in the NAIA semifinal last year at nationals, so Saturday's win had extra meaning for those Cougars who were part of last year's team that reached the Final Four.

Katie Wilkinson (4-0) got the start for CSUSM, pitching 4 1/3 innings of scoreless softball before giving way to Jordan Lamoureux, who pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings. Cortney Allen finished off the final inning to complete the shutout, getting first baseman Sloan McHann to pop up to end the game.

Kimberle Smith homered in the 4th inning to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead, and San Marcos added two more runs in the 5th to make it 3-0. Alyssa Dronenburg led off the 7th inning with her 4th home run of the year, and second of the day, to add an insurance run. CSUSM piled up 6 hits in the inning, leaving the score at 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th before Cortney Allen closed it out.

CSUSM is now 11-2 on the season, and will play next Sunday, February 26th at La Sierra.
