Box Score 2
The Cal State San Marcos Softball team won their first game against Colorado Christian 3-2 Friday afternoon, but fell 4-3 to Holy Names in extra innings to wrap up day one of the Cal Baptist Softball Tournament in Riverside, CA.
Game 1 (CSUSM 3 – Colorado Christian 2)
Box Score
The Cougars extended their winning streak to 5 with a close victory over Colorado Christian. The similarly named Cougars from Colorado got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run of a RBI double. CSUSM came back though in the top of the fourth to claim their first lead, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Colorado Christian came back in the bottom half of the inning to tie it 2-2.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the 6
th inning, when
Alex Miller hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead heading into the last inning.
Cortney Allen closed the door and recorded her 4
th save of the season, pitching a perfect 1-2-3 inning and striking out two batters. Starter Jordan Lamoureux (2-0) earned the win after pitching 6 strong innings, allowing just 4 hits and one earned run, while striking out 4.
Game 2 (CSUSM 3 – Holy Names 4)
Box Score
It looked like San Marcos would win their 6
th straight game and move to 10-1 on the season after the Cougars jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a
Theresa Houle leadoff homerun and an
Alyssa Dronenburg RBI double that brought in 2 runs. It was not to be however, as Holy Names tied it back up in the 4
th with 3 runs on 4 hits.
The score remained knotted at 3 through the 7 regulation innings, and the game went to extra innings. In this tournament, the extra inning rules allow the last out from the previous inning to be automatically placed on second to start each inning. The Cougars were not able to bring home that runner in the top of the 8
th, and Holy Names came through with a 2-out RBI single to win the game for the Hawks.
Cortney Allen (2-2) took the hard-luck loss for CSUSM, pitching 2 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run, giving up just a single in the 6
th and the walk-off single in the 8
th.
The Cougars (9-2) will play two more games tomorrow, getting a re-match against Holy Names, as well as a shot at last year's NAIA runner-up Cal Baptist, who is now a member of NCAA Division II. Cal Baptist went 66-5 last year, and was ranked #1 for the majority of the season. CSUSM was ranked as high as 2
nd a year ago, and ended the year with a 4
th place finish at the NAIA Championships. Both of tomorrow's games will be hard fought, and with plenty of meaning for San Marcos.
