Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Azusa Pacific

CSUSM falls 8-7 in the first game on a walkoff homerun, then rallies back to win the second 10-7

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team maintained their hot bats after Friday's 17 run outburst, but split a pair of games with Azusa Pacific on the road Saturday.

Game 1 (CSUSM 7- Azusa Pacific 8)

After pounding out 18 hits and 6 homeruns yesterday against Bethesda University, the Cougars kept the momentum rolling in Game 1, scoring 5 runs in the first frame. The Cougars added another run in the 2nd inning to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. Azusa Pacific slowly chipped away at the Cougar advantage, getting two runs back in the bottom of the 2nd, and eventually tying the score at 7 in the 7th inning.

The Cougars picked up a couple of hits in the 8th inning, but weren't able to bring home a run. Brendan Casey led off the bottom of the 9th inning for Azusa Pacific and hit a walkoff homerun to right field on a 2-1 count to win the game.

CSUSM starter James Dykstra pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Scott Myers (1-1) took the loss for San Marcos. On offense, the Cougars notched 14 hits, and 5 different Cougars had multi-hit games. Austin Coleman and Michael Mecucci each had RBI doubles in the game.

Game 2 (CSUSM 10 – Azusa Pacific 7)

Azusa Pacific jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after 3 innings in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Cougars struck back on offense to win 10-7. The Cougars racked up 5 extra base hits, led by outfielders Anthony Renteria and Kyle Secciani. Renteria slugged a double and a triple, and Secciani hit his third homerun of the season, adding 3 RBI's.

Starter Frank Charlton went 2 2/3 innings, allowing 6 earned runs, but the bullpen had a fine afternoon, allowing just 1 run the rest of the way. Shaun Sanford (2-0) earned the win, and Andrew Larson pitched the final 3 innings, allowing just 1 run and earning his 2nd save of the season.

The Cougars, now 8-2 on the season, will take on Chapman at home Monday, February 20th at the CSUSM Baseball Field.
